We'd just watched our middle guy graduate from eighth grade, waved goodbye to all three boys as they scattered in opposite directions for the rest of the day, walked back to the parking lot, and realized this wasn't the familiar truck we were unlocking - it was a getaway car. Here it was a sunny, late spring day, it was nearly lunchtime, and we were alone(!).
Let's all just pause for a moment of silence.
When there is an aviator in the family, the only thing predictable about this life is that it's unpredictable. The schedule is all over the clock and all over the calendar, rarely the same from season to season. We quickly learned that Christmas doesn't always happen on December 25, Thanksgiving could be on any late November day, and Father's Day is best saved for when the father is actually home. A weekly date night? We look at each other and laugh at the preposterous idea.
But, interestingly, despite all this, the honeymoon keeps finding its place, even after 21 years. Coffee, pressed and poured. The nightly message across the miles. The song whose words are better than ours. And, on the rare and momentous occasion, beneath strands of lights on a rustic porch, lunch for just the two of us.
Do what you can with what you have.
