I'd passed more than one shopping cart in the aisles that had a bundle of fresh flowers tucked between the groceries. When a splash of vibrant color is heaped into a small mountain right near the front door of the market like that, they are tempting, indeed. Fresh cuts are just the thing for early spring when outside is neither white nor green.
I considered some myself, as I pushed my cart along toward the produce section, but when I rounded the corner past the avocados and tomatoes and there before me was a tower of fresh potted herbs in tiny pots, I fell hard. This time rosemary, next time maybe basil or thyme.
In yesterday's sunshine, I set up potting shop at the end of the picnic table, with empty pots, soil, watering can - all that's needed for transplanting, and I couldn't believe this was early March.
In short sleeves and sunglasses, playing in the dirt with fresh plants at this time of year in Wyoming? Really, now.
I loved every moment (and quietly prayed for lots of rain all spring).
When I popped that plant out of its tiny pot, I found that I had not one, but two rosemary to play with. Talk about a fragrant ta-da!
I knew immediately what I was going to do with that surprise: Make a rosemary topiary. Because I've always been a romantic. In the house, on the counter, right next to the sink, it'll get the sunlight and attention it needs. Hello, topiary in the kitchen.
In case you're inspired to make one too, there's this.
