We made things. Sweet things. Things we knew how to make, and things we didn't. No matter. If sugar and flavorings are involved, it has to be good. Oh, the innocence. The precious innocence of a young baker.
They were wonky & imperfect, those green candy canes, but we'd decided from the beginning that we'd be okay with that. Pulled and rolled, twisted & curved, we knew immediately that this was like playdough, only much, much better. Candy canes hardened & the Norwegian lefse piled higher on the cooling racks. Two batches, because when memories are rolled up with butter & sugar, there has to be more.
Some of this sweet began as secrets - quiet, whispered secrets. But mostly, they were gifts. So, when one giver's heart exploded early with the giving, well, that was okay, too. Because, mostly, they were gifts, and that can happen just as well on December 22 as December 25.
Besides, there might not be anything better than the people you love, stopping by your kitchen, reaching for what you've made.
