It's nearly Thanksgiving. This means gathering and food, warmth and conversation. It also means setting the stage for the season's celebration, however simple that might be. While I'm not one to deck the house with an abundance of commercial hoopla for any season or holiday, I am one to fall for what's growing right outside. I'm one to gather it, put it together, and see what I've got - a wreath, a bouquet, a creation.
See what I mean:
So, in a sliver of remaining daylight recently, I took to the back roads with shears in hand. I had some idea of what I was looking for, but when I got out there, I saw even more - an abundance in monochrome. I'd soon waded off the beaten path after silvery branches with helicopter seedpods, straw-colored grasses, and armloads of slender willow with leaves still attached.
I realized after I'd stuffed the heap of branches into the Jeep that this isn't something you see every day. But foraging day is no time to be bothered by odd looks (branches sticking out from back of a Jeep is certainly good for that). Foraging day is for excitement over the haul. Foraging day is for a full load of fall, heading toward home.
Just you wait, all you wondering people. This is gonna be good.
Grin.
