The long summertime hours tend to pull you away, sometimes far away, to places where experiences range from trail dust to ocean spray. Summertime is for traveling, right? For filling the backpacks & the weekend bags with essentials, (leaving the computer behind, yay!) and jumping in the car, boarding a plane, stepping onto a boat.
In a smattering of days, we will be doing all of the above. So, naturally, I've been packing our bags in my mind for a few weeks now, contemplating what we should take, what we should leave, what we will need, what we won't.
And in that line-up of essential things, I have to say, handwork resides, namely, knitting. There is little that's more relaxing to me than this. I couldn't imagine, really, being three weeks on vacation without it. Once I'd decided that knitting would be in my carry-on, you can imagine the flurry of ideas that went through my mind about which knitting project to take (this has to be at least half the fun). After considering a new sweater for myself, which would also mean ordering the yarn, I realized the better choice would be a smaller, more manageable project/s, using yarn I already had, maybe get a jump-start on Christmas gifts while I'm sitting on the plane with an audio book in my ears.
So, I've been going through my yarn stash, small as it is, seeing what's there, seeing what patterns I have, and for whom they would fit. Hats and fingerless gloves? I think I'm onto the perfect things.
Do what you can with what you have.
