Our recent words about contentment inspired me to begin a series that celebrates ingenuity, creativity, and resourcefulness. 

 

 

For hanging the white cotton shirt on the bedroom wall? An antique finial, found free in a jumble of junk at a California antiques store years ago. 

 

The turned wood with its original finish is art in itself. 

 

But, add to that the dimension of a white cotton shirt and chunky glass & ceramic beads, and you've taken art to a whole new level (in winter, I'll sometimes hang a sweater and scarf here, too). Who says walls are only for paintings, drawings, illustrations, and photos?

Do what you can with what you have.

For a window that needs covering: a length of white, raw-edged linen, five brass thumb tacks, and two bits of time. 

 

 

To hide the tacks from view, fold the top edge of the linen over twice, and place the tacks from behind.  Simple. Beautiful. 

Do what you can with what you have.

To Be Content

 

When it seems that at the end of every link is something to buy. When the turn of each season is shouting its new releases that have to be purchased in order for you to be current & content. When the wallet bleeds. 

Think about pulling back. Think about a vintage sheet thrown over top as the bedcover. Think about stacking books under the old lamp to make it taller than it is. Think about using that chair as a nightstand, because a nightstand you do not have. Think about pages torn from a book - suddenly art for the walls if ever there was art. 

Think about making do, and doing what you can with what you have. Think about finding value in what already is.
