Gosh, hello! The internet has been down, then up for a teaser, then down in our neck of the woods for the last couple days. I felt for the cable man who was out in the snowstorm today, trying to find the problem and fix it. Driving his big truck here, then there, then back again. Getting out, getting soaked as he tapped and tinkered at those boxes that poke up from the ground. Bless him.
So, friends, a rare Friday evening post for you!
This cowl. Oh, my. If you want a knit that's an easy, don't-have-to-pay-much-attention-while-you're-doing-it project, this is the one for you. Last fall, when in need of such a thing, I searched high and low. Most patterns I found were more involved than I wanted, or would require more that I was willing to give in modifications to become what I had in mind. Then I found this. I loved the groupings of knit and purl rows which create the striped effect.
The first one off my needles was a golden yellow one. Love, love. I wear it often - even in the early morning when I get up and the house is still chilly and asleep. Wrapped in that and my warm sweater, I hardly notice. Even before I finished it, though, I knew I wanted to make another right away. It was the perfect project to fill the empty minutes of my days, the perfect project to gift-knit for another.
So, on a cold fall day, just after Thanksgiving, tucked deep into a built-in cabinet in an attic bedroom of my husband's childhood ranch house in Montana, I found this amazing blue yarn. Part of the stash curated by my late mother-in-law, it was perfect - the color of a deep lake on a bright summer day. She certainly knew blue. I couldn't ask for anything better. Her yarn, woven through my days, looped into something to give away.
I think she'd like that.
Modifications: I doubled the number of cast on stitches so I would end up with a longer, circular scarf instead of a shorter, thicker cowl. I also repeated the pattern of rows between the ** only three times instead of four so I wouldn't end up with too much bulk around my neck when I looped it for wearing. The yarn is Lion Brand Cotton Ease in 109 blueberry (discontinued).
