So, way back when (it seems), after our little house was mostly complete, I photographed the interior and published it on the blog. Things sort of went crazy after that May day, after all of you saw those photos. You told your friends, and they told their friends, and more of you came here to read and follow. Big and small sites on the internet picked up our story, spreading the word around about this family of five who lives in a little house in Wyoming, and even more of you came here to read and follow. A magazine snagged the story, too, and sent a crew a few months later to shoot the house for a story that appeared on the cover of the February issue; yet more of you came here to read and follow.
And in that following and that reading, you began asking about how you could build one like this, too. So, I began to draw. It was a plan that was inspired by ours, would look much like ours, but be even better than ours. I dreamed up and sketched modifications in key areas for a permanent, foundation-built cabin for you. It was to be one plan, for one dwelling, full-set that any experienced builder could build from, and I was shooting for a June release date, because, you know, summer.
Then, it just so happened that about the time I was wrapping it up and tying the bow, requests came in from several directions. You told me of your family shapes and sizes, your needs, your hopes, and would this plan work for your family, too? In lots of cases it would, in many cases it wouldn't, and I wrestled with that (and was a bit overwhelmed by that, actually). I wanted as many of you as possible to be able to choose a small house plan that woud fit your needs.
So, just when I was winding down, I took a deep breath, rolled up my sleeves, and dove back in. I drew through the summer, volleying my sketches back and forth with my draftsman (who was ever so gracious to continue a project that he, too, was expecting to be finished in June), tweaking, editing, making just right.
Loves? There's something you might like to know...
What began as a set of plans for one little house, has now become a collection of four!
Four small house plans for you to choose from. Exciting, indeed! I had no idea I was designing a collection, but there it is. Now maybe it makes sense why I said, back in the spring, that I was on the down-hill slide, and that the plans were due out soon, and why it's now September, and I'm saying that I'm on the down-hill slide and that the plans are due out soon! (To put this into perspective, I once heard an architect say that it took him a year, in his spare time, to draw plans for a small house for general publication and sale. Three plans have been added to this collection in three months of my not-so-spare time. Yes, I'm a bit sleepy.)
But a collection of four? Goodness, do I have great hopes for you and the opportunity that awaits! I'll keep you posted on the release date, friends.
If you'd like to be added to the first-to-know list, shoot me an email at: assortmentblog(at)gmail(dot)com. I may not be able to reply (I really need a clone of me just to manage the inbox!), but I'll definitely add you to the list.
Wishing you the best of Mondays!
