And since today is also the last day of February, the month that our home was featured in and on the cover of Country Living, I thought it would be fun to go out with a bang and give away some extra copies of the magazine sent to me from the editorial staff! Since it sold out quickly in several places, and was hard to find in others, this is your chance to get one if you missed out.

An Exterior Peek & Front Porch Dreams

In the waiting, we often drum the fingers and tap the toes. Fidget. Cast our eyes to an imaginary clock, checking to see if it’s time yet. But, maybe it’s in the waiting, where time can breathe, that good things become great things. I’ve talked about this waiting before. The waiting that happens when you’ve made the choice for paying as you go, for make-do until the cold hard cash is piled sufficiently high. This whole cabin was built this waiting way. In small steps and sometimes large ones, the building, the finishing, and the furnishing were complete. All except for the front porch.

That’s the last big thing to go for this little house. A full-length covered porch. And what better time than right here, right now, in the middle of more snow and below zero temperatures, to talk about a front porch?

In my mind, it’s a very simple farmhouse design with no railing or fussy details, just square posts with simple bases and capitals, a painted plank floor, and a simple ceiling. I wouldn’t even mind if the tin roof showed from below.

Here is our cabin (and a much-asked-for peek at the exterior - grin), in mid-winter snow. Right now, we have the stand-in ‘hill-billy’ porch – a landing and stair that were literally whacked together from scrap material – given to us free. It gets us into and out of the front door just fine, but oh, we anxiously await the day when a full-length covered porch takes its place!

In the mean time, I’ll keep collecting images, and practice that ever-necessary thing called patience. And you can be sure that you’ll be the first to know when construction begins!

On A Snowy Sunday

 

 

 

 

 

 

A drive through the falling snow (oh, the snowfall these last three days, and more to come) to an old guest ranch in the foothills, just my guy and I, for lunch in the dining room of the old stone house there (the small stone building in the last photo here was the original powerhouse).

It was a perfect way to spend a snowy afternoon: hot tea, hot coffee, tall windows to look through, and conversation that didn’t have to hurry.

Perfect.
