It’ll be square in the middle of the sunny spot behind the house, that larger garden plot that’s in the works. There’s been doodling and sketching across graph paper; lists running down the side. I find that if I really don’t know where to start, drawing lines on paper is a good place. You can add, subtract, sketch in, scribble out, or even turn the page over and start clean (I have done all of those things!). And even though we keep having snowstorms, I’m reminding myself daily that spring really is here – time to get some plants growing.
In the middle of all the planning for where we’re going to grow our food, was the challenge of where we’re going to store our food. The limited shelf space in the little house would not be nearly sufficient for a summer’s harvest. So, a larder was conceived. We’ll be moving an abandoned shed from another part of the property nearer to our garden spot, right there by the fence and the creek. We’ll give it a little attention, a little paint, a new door. We’ll double insulate it, run power to it for the chest freezer and oil heater, and build shelves inside. Outside, it’ll be lined with hollyhocks. Grin.
Planning, growing, harvesting, storing – we’re ready for home grown.
Now to get the seeds started.
